Four tips for great video

The best thing about creating a video on a smartphone is it teaches you to get back to the basics.

You can't rely on fancy effects, or thousands of dollars of editing software to make your video look better than it is in a short space of time. You simply need to tell a story well and get your shot right first time (not plan to fix it later).

So what are some of the basics?

1. Plan your shoot: Planning your story and knowing what shots you need to get is the first place to start.

2. Composition: What are you trying to convey with your shot? That will determine what kind of shot you need to get and what you include in it.

3. Good lighting: You want even lighting. Harsh shadows aren't forbidden but they do suggest an ominous tone.

4. Quality audio: Smartphones have many shortfalls when it comes to recording audio. You need to overcome these to get good quality audio. Bad audio distracts your viewer.

The added bonus to creating videos on your smartphone is you're not bogged down with importing and converting footage into a computer. You can get a video from filming to completion in a relatively short space of time given that it's all on one device.
